The ships that built the West: The Scandinavian Navy, Wapama and Værdalen by Olaf Engvig is telling the story about how the original shipping was changed from wooden and sail shipping to iron and steam vessels during 150 years. The main focus is on the Scandinavian navy, the ships and their mostly Scandinavian-American crew who transported lumber down the west coast of the United States to expand cities such as San Francisco and Los Angeles . The book explains thoroughly how shipping has changed from primitive connections without the availability of harbours, until later on when the ships were bigger, more modern and piers became available. And of course the book contains detailed and amazing stories about the shipping development and how the crews had to learn and experience the change of working life on board the ships.
The restoration of the steam schooner Værdalen, and the huge amount of work and patience required to restore the ship over several decades years have been described in detail by Olaf Engvig, who for his entire professional life has organized and worked during the restauration of a wide range of historic ships. The book also includes a detailed chapter on the Wapama, which was first saved in San Francisco but tragically later scrapped.
Because the crews stayed most of their lives on board the ships of the Scandinavian Navy and had very little time to write letters home like the settlers on the prairie did, people on land did not really appreciate the extent of their hard work. And when museums were built, the shipping was not a common part of that. The restauration of ships, and the need for housing on land to describe their history and to protect the old and restored ships is still limited, compared to the large museums describing the work on land for both buildings, trains, airplanes and many land based professions and activities.
The way of describing the development is very interesting, and the book is highly recommended for readers of all ages and shipping interest, and readers with different levels of background in shipping and history.
