This is a fine addition to the LitRPG genre, and is worth reading. I plan to get the next Galactogon book when it gets released. Yet it didn't make a full 5 stars for me.

There are different styles of LitRPG. I find the Korean books like Legendary Moonlight Sculptor and Ark spend a lot of time detailing how the protagonists grind endlessly to bring their characters from zero. I enjoy reading about this process, though it makes for a slower start. The Russian LitRPGs I've read tend to skip over such details as tedious. D. Rus' "Play To Live," for example, skipped the main character's grinding to level 30 with a bit of luck. This new addition by V. Mahanenko takes luck to a whole new level! There are no skills, stats, etc in Galactogon. Equipment is used for advancement. The protagonist in this story keeps moving from overpowered equipment to overpowered equipment, gained mostly through luck. It feels like wish fulfilment, or that the story should just have started with a high-level character. It was so pronounced as to almost be comedic, like the Japanese fairy tale of the farmer who stumbled on a piece of straw and then ended up a millionaire (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Straw_Millionaire). The saving grace of this book is that it was well written/translated and that the rest of the story (plot/action/drama/etc) was compelling. I am curious to see how the game unfolds, and the author does a good job of weaving drama between the game and real life. Be warned, however: the book ends on a cliffhanger!

What can I say about this other than it is just one more fantastic piece of literature by a truly astounding author! I love all of his work and I can’t wait to read more of this series!!!!!
When I saw that Mr. Mahanenko was having a different series than the Way of the Shaman translated, I was a little disappointed at first. I didn't know if I was going to buy this book. HA, who am I kidding, this guy writes gold. The book is more awesome than I though it would be. Action, drama, peril in the game and out. Mr. Mahanenko does a wonderful job of building a new world both in the game and out, introducing and making his characters three dimensional, and making you emotionally attached to them. I was always wanting to turn the next page to find out what happened next.
I must say I agree with what the other readers whom had done a review has written on this and I also found this book a great read. The story is interesting all the way through and I'm not disappointed. I didn't think a space virtual reality game theme is at great as your typical sword and magic based game but after I've read this, I think the story itself has alot of room for development and can be made into several books no problem. Those that have read Vasily Mahanaenko's other book will also find this interesting and will make you want to ask when the next book will be translated from russian!
I can honestly say that this was one of the best books I have read in a very long time. Those of us that read many of these types of books can generally tell you the outline of said book, not so much with Galactogon. This one jumped off the rails from the very first VR session and never looked back.
In short this is a very very smooth reading book that keeps you intrigued from the beginning. I couldn't put it down and read it in one night
Another great addition to the LitRPG genre. This was even better than Survival Quest. The MC was interesting and smart. The story outside the game world blended seamlessly with the story and was just as intriguing. It also didn't seem to be set in a completely dystopian society like most of the worlds these books are set in. I wasn't thrilled with how the book ended, but I'll be picking up the next one because as a whole, this was an excellent novel. Keep up the good work and keep writing!
I've read quite a few different books in the LitRPG genre and I'd say this one ranks pretty high on that list as far as world building, plot and entertainment are concerned. The author pulled enough jargon and sci-fi theory from other sources that you will be familiar with while creating some of his own elements that fit nicely in the gaps. There are only a couple translation errors that I noticed and it was easy to just skip over them without being too noticeable.

There are a couple reasons why I didn't give this 5 stars

First, while the author did a great job describing the game world, not much was said of the real world in which the characters/contestants live. We can assume it's in Russia but aren't sure of when. It's some point in the future - far enough to make references like "epic fail - as the ancients would say", have flying vehicles and smart homes that are close to self aware. But not too far into the future to still make anachronistic references and use basic firearms.

Secondly, as another reviewer put it, the protagonist is just plain lucky to the point of absurdity. It's as if he could simply not make a bad decision - and just when you think he did, BAM there's the answer and some legendary gear.

Finally, the last chapter was just such a 180 from the flow and writing style of the rest of the book. It just seemed so rushed that it felt almost like a cop out (a perverted one at that).

None of those things though offset the fun I had reading this though. Overall it was a good read and I'm likely going to get the next book when it is translated.
Read a few of these style books before but I must say this one excels.... Loved the way the book was written and found myself unable to put it down - my only break was actually having to sleep - but finished in the second sitting.

The book brings you into a universe where I felt like I wanted to play the game myself - the mixing of Real Life and Game Play story lines was excellent and well balanced.

My only regret is having to wait for book 2 - please tell me it's ready and waiting...... -)
